Pencil and subsequent watercolor paper test study of the Innsmouth lighthouse ruins for my comic book adaptation of "The Shadow over Innsmouth" by H. P. Lovecraft.
The imaginary town of Innsmouth was located by Lovecraft on the coast of Massachusetts, between Newburyport and Cape Ann, just south-east of Rowley and north-east of Ipswich, in the Essex County. Since the shore faces east, and the lighthouse ruins are described to be just in front of the town waterfront, this painting, could be resembling a winter early afternoon view, with the Sun behind the viewer or on the right.
The main character and narrator of the short story, arrives in Innsmouth before or around noon. Therefore, the challenge will be to make Innsmouth appearing gloomy and creepy, in the daylight.
